Places Of Local Interest In Perthshire
Perthshire's places of interest are many and varied. A few of our favourites include: The Italianate Gardens at Drummond Castle, Blair Drummond Safari Park, Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument, Stone of Destiny at Scone Palace. Muthill is also ideally located for swimming, sports and leisure activities at Crieff Hydro, Gleneagles and Perth.
For children there is the nearby Ceramic Experience, Auchingarroch Wildlife Centre and Crieff Park with tennis and trampolining facilities. Twenty minutes away by car in one direction there is Stirling with it's famous castle, Blair Drummond Safari Park, excellent shopping, bowling and new cinema complex. Twenty minutes in the other direction is Perth, by the beautiful River Tay, which offers Noah's Ark soft play complex with indoor karting, golf driving range, ceramics, ten pin bowling and trampolining, as well as swimming at Perth Leisure Centre, an ice rink, theatres and a wide variety of shopping opportunities.
Known as Big Tree Country, Perthshire has an outstanding natural environment with magnificent tree and woodland hertiage famous all over the world. Be in awe of the oldest living thing in Europe, Fortingall Yew. The tree is thought to be between 3,000 and 9,000 years old and still thrives in its peacful corner of Fortingall churchyard. Or stand in the shadow of Meikleour Beech Hedge - the tallest in the world!
Perthshire's largest Loch, Loch Tay, is a beatutiful and serene stretch of water; at some 14 miles/23 km long. The home of ancient settlers who once made their unique homes called Crannog's along the banks. The Scottish Crannog Centre, features a reconstructed crannog built on the loch which paints a fascinating picture of early Iron Age life and is a must for visitors both young and old. At the eastern edge of Loch Tay lies the pretty whitewashed conservation village of Kenmore.
Perthshire has over 250 miles of walks, along many of which you can enjoy wondrous views. Plenty of Perthshire walks are suitable for all ages and abilities. The Cateran Trail is a stunning circular trek for the more accomplished walker, at 64miles through the scenic Perthshire and Angus glens.
